Śnieżne Kotły is an excellent viewing point with a panoramic view of the Karkonosze Mountains, the Jizera Mountains, the Kaczawskie Mountains, the Rudawy Janowickie Mountains and the Jelenia Góra Valley. If the weather is good, you can see Ślęża in the Sudeten Foothills.
Śnieżne Kotły consists of two glacial cirques - Mały Śnieżny Kocioł on the west and Wielki Śnieżny Kocioł on the east, separated by a rocky perch.
At the bottom of Wielki Śnieżny Kocioł and in the foreland of Mały Śnieżny Kocioł, between the moraines, there are three periodically drying glacial lakes called Śnieżne Stawki and several flush ponds.
Śnieżne Kotły are two impressive glacial cirques (Mały and Wielki) located in the Karkonosze Mountains, between Szrenica and Łabski Szczyt. They are among the most spectacular rock formations in the region, with vertical walls reaching heights of up to 200 meters, offering an excellent vantage point over the Karkonosze Mountains and the Jelenia Góra Valley.
The hiking time depends on the starting point you choose. The most popular route from Szklarska Poręba (via Hala Szrenicka and Szrenica) takes an average of 3 to 4 hours one way. By taking the lift to Szrenica, you can shorten the hike along the ridge to about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The ridge trail (Polish-Czech Friendship Trail) is technically easy but requires good physical condition due to the elevation gain and distance. The uphill sections can be more challenging (e.g., the yellow trail next to the shelter below Łabski Szczyt). In winter, the trail can be icy and requires special caution and appropriate equipment (ice axes/crampons).
The most scenic route leads from Szklarska Poręba along the red trail through Szrenica. An alternative for those seeking a shorter ascent is to take the lift up to Szrenica and walk along the Karkonosze ridge. For more experienced hikers, the yellow trail is recommended, leading along the bottom of the cirques, from where you can admire the monumental rock walls from below.
It is best to park at one of the paid parking lots in Szklarska Poręba, near the lower station of the Szrenica ski lift (Turystyczna Street). This is the most convenient starting point for most trails leading toward Śnieżne Kotły
The main ridge trail above Śnieżne Kotły is usually accessible year-round; however, during the winter, for safety reasons (avalanche risk), some approach routes are closed, including the yellow trail leading through the bottom of the cirques (next to Śnieżne Stawki). Always check the latest bulletin from the Karkonosze National Park before heading into the mountains.
